Palm Gazer Rug

Palm Gazer Rug

Meet our next release - The Palm Gazer Rug.

This design is definitely one of the quieter designs I’ve created so far, and that was very much the point. It's calm, considered, and been made to fit in almost anywhere, which is honestly one of the things I love most about it.

The idea for this design sparked from a warm and fairly non-eventful evening sitting on the driveway while watching the kids ride up and down the street on their bikes. I was watching the palm trees sway above me, and it started me thinking to a few weeks prior when we spent the weekend up in Port Douglas. We set up with our picnic dinner of fish and chips at Rex Smeal Point, which if you don't know, is a glorious spot at the edge of the Port Douglas peninsula, where you can watch the sun set and and the moon rise. And that evening, as we watched the stars slowly emerge across the sky as the night grew darker, it just felt kind of magical.

It was around this time last year that we stayed in Port, because it was that moment when for the first time of the year, you actually feel that the full blown summer heat has finally ended, and the evening air softens into something slightly cooler. And I specifically remember this because it was cool enough for me to to want to put a long sleeve on the boys, but I hadn't packed any.  But the breeze was only light, the boys (by some miracle) were playing nicely together, affording the people around us the privilege of not having to witness their WWE wrestling skills lol. It was one of those every day moments that I knew I would look back on later, and realise it was a memory I wanted to hang on to.

So.... back to me sitting on on my driveway, and reminiscing about our time spent in Port a few weekends before, and I realised I wanted to capture that moment - somehow - in a rug. I wanted to convey that feeling of simple together-ness, and calmness I felt that evening. The contentment of just sitting still in the moment, and knowing that there was absolutely nothing else I would rather be doing, and no where else I would rather be, was something I wanted to transport into the design. So all of a sudden I found myself wanting to create a rug that was chasing a 'feeling' rather than having a specific image in my head of what it should 'look' like... which I discovered is actually a pretty tricky thing to convey.

All I knew, was that I didn’t want this design to feel overly busy or bright, as I wanted that calm, relaxed mood to shine through as the most prominent feeling. I still wanted it to feel tropical, but in a really restrained way, subtly paying homage to Rex Smeal Point without it necessarily screaming 'Far North Queensland'. And I think I've managed to achieve that. The Palm Gazer Rug is soft, considered, and easy on the eye. It feels natural and settled, and the toned-down pallet provides that relaxed vibe I was striving for. This will become an easy-to-reach-for staple for inside the home, and weekends alike.
